Sensnet Analytics strengthens NORDSEC with advanced fibre optic sensing technology

Monitoring and protecting critical infrastructure is at the core of Sensnet Analytics, a new member of NORDSEC Nordic Defence and Security Cluster. The Ålesund-based company develops software and algorithms built on Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), a technology that can transform existing fibre optic networks into large-scale sensing systems.

Jan_Langhammer_CEOFounded in January 2024 as a spin-off from NTNU's SFI Centre for Geophysical Forecasting and Monitoring (CGF), Sensnet Analytics develops methods and software that use existing fibre optic cables to monitor critical infrastructure both offshore and onshore.

Using DAS technology, fibre optic cables can function as thousands of virtual sensors along their entire length. This enables continuous, real-time monitoring and detection of events such as faults, leaks, geohazards, intrusions, and potential acts of sabotage.

"We want to contribute software, expertise, and practical knowledge on how DAS technology can be applied across a wide range of use cases, while also introducing the technology to a broader professional community," says CEO Jan Langhammer.

Exploring opportunities in defence and dual-use markets

The technology has already demonstrated potential in several military applications. Through its membership in NORDSEC, Sensnet Analytics aims to strengthen relations with the defence sector and other companies working with dual-use technologies.

The company sees significant opportunities within surveillance, situational awareness, and the protection of critical infrastructure for both national defence organisations and allied partners.

"We want to connect with relevant partners and explore business opportunities within defence. Our ambition is to become a technology provider to the Norwegian Armed Forces, Nordic defence organisations, and NATO allies, delivering solutions for surveillance and monitoring," says Langhammer.

Adding new capabilities to the cluster

NORDSEC brings together companies, research institutions, and public-sector organisations developing technologies and solutions for the defence and security sector. By becoming part of the cluster, Sensnet Analytics adds valuable expertise in sensing technologies, data analytics, and critical infrastructure monitoring.

Our technology detects and locates activity along fibre-optical cables in near-real time, without installing new sensors in the field. Joining NORDSEC lets us work closely with the defence and security community to adapt the technology to their needs” says CTO Robin André Rørstadbotnen

The company's approach of extracting actionable intelligence from existing fibre optic networks demonstrates how civilian technologies can be adapted and further developed to meet emerging security and defence needs.

We welcome Sensnet Analytics as a new member of NORDSEC Nordic Defence and Security Cluster.
